Eight arrested in Brazilian bus burnings

Eight people have been arrested in northeastern Brazil over a wave of arson attacks on buses in the seaside city of Fortaleza, police said Thursday.
Criminal gangs were behind the burning spree, either to protest against changes in conditions for imprisoned members or to demand their transfer to different prisons, according to local media.
Police said in a statement that two people were arrested Thursday, bringing the total to eight, and that extra security had been deployed to guard the city’s bus system.
One driver was lightly injured in a blaze, police said, while Globo news organization reported Thursday that a handicapped ticket collector was hospitalized with burns over 90 percent of his body after being caught in an attack.
